Successful launch of the Future:Trials STFNs initiative in Munich
16/10/2025Today Future:Trials is pleased to speak with Mobil Krankenkasse, our partner at the Future:Trials STFNs conference in Munich 2025. Mobil Krankenkasse is a pioneering health insurance provider in Germany with a tradition dating back to 1952. Known not only for comprehensive healthcare services but also for its strong commitment to innovation, Mobil Krankenkasse actively drives digital transformation, groundbreaking health projects, and sustainable solutions. In this interview, we explore their forward-thinking initiatives such as app-based care models, telemedicine, and collaborations with startups, as well as their vision for the future of health insurance in a rapidly changing industry.
Future:Trials:
Please introduce Mobil Krankenkasse. When was the organization founded, in which regions and areas is it active today, and how large is it?
Mobil Krankenkasse: We were originally founded on October 1, 1952, as a company health insurance fund for the former Mobil Oil AG. In 1999, we opened our services to people outside the corporate environment, and since 2014, we’ve been accessible nationwide. Today, we insure around 870,000 people and employ approximately 1,500 staff at several locations across Germany, including Munich (headquarters), Hamburg (administration), Celle, and Neu-Isenburg.
Future:Trials:
Who can become a member? Are there any restrictions regarding professions?
Mobil Krankenkasse: Our doors are open to everyone who is legally insured in Germany — whether they are mandatorily or voluntarily insured. There are no restrictions based on profession, age, or region. We welcome a wide range of individuals: employees, apprentices, students, freelancers, the self-employed, and retirees. We also provide dedicated services and information tailored to students and freelancers.
Future:Trials:
Which target groups do you specifically address?
Mobil Krankenkasse: We place particular emphasis on younger audiences such as students and trainees through targeted marketing campaigns. At the same time, we also address families, young professionals, and the self-employed. This focus is reflected in both our communication strategy and the design of our benefits.
Future:Trials:
What sets you apart from other providers? Why are you particularly attractive?
Mobil Krankenkasse: One of our strengths lies in our comprehensive prevention and bonus programs. A standout feature is the fit for cash bonus program, which can be easily managed via our own MOBIL ME App. Our insured members benefit from generous reimbursements — up to €1,200 annually for health courses and up to €280 for health travel. In addition, we offer modern digital services, a streamlined online enrollment process, and a wide-ranging benefits package that goes well beyond statutory requirements.
Future:Trials:
What specific services and advantages can members expect?
Mobil Krankenkasse: Our members enjoy a broad range of services that exceed the legal minimum, including:
- Expanded preventive care: additional health screenings and alternative treatments like osteopathy and homeopathy.
- Discounted health travel.
- “Mein Extra Gesundheitsgeld – 200PLUS”: up to €200 per year for individual health services such as professional teeth cleaning or osteopathy.
- Family-focused services: a pregnancy account worth over €1,000, additional child health check-ups, and mother-father-child rehab programs.
On the digital side, we’re also leading the way. Our MOBIL ME App provides automatic reminders for preventive exams and vaccinations. The fit for cash program rewards healthy behavior with up to €200 per year, including a welcome bonus for first-time participants. Members have 24/7 access to telemedical consultations via TeleClinic, along with a care consultation hotline and electronic health account.
For those seeking personal service, we offer support at our locations in Hamburg, Munich, Celle, and Neu-Isenburg. Our customer service hotline is available on weekdays — including an international number — and members also benefit from access to a doctor’s hotline, appointment scheduling support for specialists, and provider recommendations.
Future:Trials:
How important is innovation at Mobil Krankenkasse? Can you highlight one or two innovative projects?
Mobil Krankenkasse: Innovation is a central pillar of Mobil Krankenkasse’s strategy. The fund is actively involved in the Innovation Fund of the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) and has participated in over 50 projects to date—around 30 of which have received funding.
A standout example is the moVe-it project (2023/2024), where Mobil Krankenkasse acts as consortium leader. The goal is app-based, interdisciplinary care for stroke patients with spasticity, including personalized therapy recommendations and virtual case conferences for continuous care.
Another innovative project is FaPP-MgB – BESSER Gesund Leben, initiated by the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with Mobil Krankenkasse and other partners. It focuses on case management and health promotion for adults with intellectual disabilities.
In addition, the fund works with the health-tech startup Diametos and offers the Snorefox app, which uses smartphone-based sound analysis to detect sleep apnea risks. Users receive a risk score and recommendations, such as consulting a sleep specialist.
Future:Trials:
How is Mobil Krankenkasse positioned regarding digitalization and sustainability?
Mobil Krankenkasse: Digital transformation is a core part of the brand strategy. Under the guiding principle “Nachhaltig gesund” (“sustainably healthy”), Mobil Krankenkasse aims to offer efficient digital services while maintaining fair contributions and lean administrative processes.
This vision is reflected in digital tools such as the MOBIL ME App, telemedicine services, and a flexible hybrid working model. Paperless processes, remote consultations, and automated workflows are part of this sustainable digital transformation.
Future:Trials:
What is your outlook for the healthcare and insurance sectors in the coming years? What trends are you observing?
Mobil Krankenkasse: The healthcare sector is undergoing fundamental change. Key trends include:
Demographic change & shortage of skilled workers: By 2035, Germany may lack up to 1.8 million nursing professionals. The number of people requiring care will rise from 2.5 million today to 3.5 million by 2030. Health insurers must take a more active role in care—through case management and digital support.
Digitalization & technology: AI, wearables, mHealth, and telemedicine are becoming essential tools. Studies predict rapid growth in the use of intelligent virtual assistants. Mobil Krankenkasse is well-positioned here with its app, bonus program, and TeleClinic services—and is likely to expand its offering with AI-based services and mHealth.
Personalized & precision medicine: Precision oncology, regenerative therapies, and robotics are transforming care. Insurers engaged in research-driven networks like Mobil in the Innovationsfonds will have an edge.
Sustainability & climate responsibility: The healthcare sector contributes up to 5% of CO₂ emissions. Initiatives such as Green Hospital and Health for Future promote climate-friendly health strategies. The “Nachhaltig gesund” principle of Mobil Krankenkasse fits perfectly in this context.
Market restructuring: The number of health insurers continues to decline (from 95 in 2024 to 94 in 2025), while private investors increase their presence in the healthcare system. Insurers must clearly differentiate themselves—through prevention, sustainability, and quality. Mobil Krankenkasse is well-positioned with its modern, digital, and responsible brand identity.
Future:Trials:
What are your predictions for the future of the healthcare sector?
Mobil Krankenkasse: We see several key developments that will shape the future of the healthcare sector — some of them already emerging, others gaining momentum in the years ahead.
First and foremost, digitalization will become the backbone of the entire system. AI-supported diagnostics, telemedicine, mHealth, and automation won’t just be add-ons — they’ll be integral to how care is delivered. We’re already seeing that shift, and it’s only going to accelerate.
Another major trend is the move toward personalized healthcare. The days of one-size-fits-all treatments are coming to an end, especially in areas like oncology. We expect a much stronger focus on individualized medicine, tailored to the specific needs and biology of each patient.
Sustainability and inclusivity will also take on a much larger role. That means everything from climate-friendly hospital infrastructure to greater emphasis on making healthcare accessible for all segments of society.
At the same time, demographic changes will drive an increasing demand for both preventive care and long-term support. We’ll need more integrated, patient-centered solutions — not just for those receiving care, but also for the people providing it.
And finally, we anticipate continued market consolidation. As the number of insurers decreases, the focus will shift more toward quality, innovation, and service differentiation. Only those who can truly deliver added value to their members — in terms of both health outcomes and experience — will stand out in this evolving landscape.
Mobil Krankenkasse in the context of these trends
Mobil Krankenkasse is already part of this transformation—with tools like the MOBIL ME App, fit for cash, and TeleClinic—and is building a strong foundation. In the future, the fund plans to expand AI-based services, mHealth programs, and sustainable offerings, as well as deepen collaborations with research institutions and startups.
